To Play or Not to Play.

I think it’s been around 5 - 7 years since I played songs on a stage. I say “I think” because I don’t remember playing on a stage when Trump was President, and I certainly haven’t played since I got married. Did I mention I got married?

So Jill Rogers, my fabulous friend who heads up the alt retro country band Crying Time, says to me hey whatdya say let’s do something. You me and Val Esway (another longtime songstress friend) she says. We could just trade songs, super simple. Like a song circle? i say. Can we sit on comfy couches? Maybe just mic the room? That’s probably about all I could handle, having not really played at all, not like the two of you who are still well seasoned performers, i say. Sure, Jill says. We can do that. Let’s do that.

And so we are.

Even though Covid. Even though Ukraine. Even though gas prices and microchip shortages and inflation and glaciers melting and attempts to overthrow elections.

That’s all I got.

the kitka remix project

A new song that I'm really proud of - a remix project with Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble - an extraordinary ensemble influenced by Eastern European music and vocal technique.

Kitka invited several artists to do remixes of tracks from their critically acclaimed album Wintersongs

The link below will take you to the page where you can listen to all the remixes, watch video of each artist talking about the project, and make your own Kitka remix.

SF Song Circle on 1-12-16

SF native singer/songwriter/musician essence is doing a month long residency at the Bazaar Cafe in San Francisco. Every Tuesday she is inviting songwriters to join her in a song circle. I'll be playing on the 2nd Tuesday in January along with Donovan Plant, Dan Roger Rocha, and of course, essence. :) I haven't done anything like this out of doors in a very long time and am looking forward to it.

1-12-16   7pm   Bazaar Cafe    5927 California St., SF, CA

open mics are cool & fun.

i signed up for an open mic, something i haven't done in something like 15 years.

i got picked, so i'll be playing a baby set, just me and my acoustic guitar, this friday evening in san francisco. it's at a place called the surrey street salon. you can find it on facebook or by doing a google search. i'm a little nervous, but no matter. that'll all go away, like it always does, once i play the first chord.

Rare Performance this Saturday in Oakland

Had our first of two rehearsals last night for the show this Saturday. Dang. These guys make me feel all giddy. There's John Shiurba and Myles Boisen on electric guitars, Wil Hendricks on electric wurlitzer and Suki O'Kane on samples on drums, and I'll be running around playing acoustic guitar, pump organ, ouijachord and optigan, plus singing, and Kelly Atkins will be singing backing vocals.

So what I'm saying is that, if you can make this show, I'll be happy to see you there. I'm really excited to be playing this new record and I don't have any other dates to do it again like this since all these marvelous players are off doing lots of other projects.

If you'd like to come, email me at kw@ultralash.com and I'll send you the address. It's at a private warehouse space in West Oakland, CA.
